Life can get us down; fortunately, we all have hobbies, exercise, and special people to add joy back into our lives. In my case, I have a fantastic family, friends, house repairs, bike riding, hikes, and writing to make up for the bad times.
Writing is a challenging hobby that I am privileged to pursue. This article is a perfect example of this freedom; I can choose my topic, writing style, and content. This little gem has been an enjoyable experience, and it felt good to finish it.
Even the technical documents I do for work and home bring me a little joy. I get to use the words I want, and the result is beneficial. It feels good to accomplish something that other people appreciate.
But… What about the bad stuff: obituaries, bad performance reviews, termination letters, complaints, and bad news? Indeed, this kind of writing does not bring joy, which is why I used the word supposed in my title. Still, it is good to be able to communicate, even bad stuff.
And there are other negative aspects. Writing takes time, mental energy, diligence, courage, money, and patience. The worst part is warranted and unwarranted negative feedback, which requires courage to push through.
Still, I believe the overall process is worth the effort. And it should be. While the physical act of writing is solitary, authors load their writing with amazing people (characters). Even the words have a positive aspect. What is the best way to put together a sentence? How can we spice up a description? What is the motivation? It is all a creative process.
Writing is a privilege and a gift. There are many places in this wonderful world where people do not have the means to write, even though they have the gift of great stories within them. There are also repressive governments and parents who prevent amazing people from expressing themselves. I am truly lucky to live where I live and have the means to put my words in front of people I have never met.
Yet, there are days I do not want to touch the keyboard. Who cares what my characters do! Editing is for the birds! The critics are right! No more articles! Stay in bed! True, but all it takes is one fantastic sentence to bring a smile to my face.
Sure, I sometimes need some grumbling or long walks to get back into the mood. Yet, I like the mood. I have a certain familiarity with my characters. We are old friends. Yes, we argue, get bad reviews, and have plot holes, but in the end, we are partners on this chaotic path.
I am glad that I became an author. It is a creative outlet, and I have met many excellent writers online. Yes, I am referring to you, Adekunle Dayark, Emily Rayven, Miriam Yvette, Alex Robins, and Bethany Kelly. Plus, there are the fantastic readers of articles and books. Thanks for sticking with me all these years and making this effort so worthwhile.
